For an enabling environment to reduce drop outs and promote enrolment of girl child in secondary schools, department of education and literacy is implementing ‘National Scheme of Incentive to Girls for Secondary Education (NSIGSE). The scheme covers all girls of SC/ST communities who clear class VIII and all girls irrespective of any community they belong to who clear class VIII from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and enroll for class IX in state/UT government, government aided and local body schools. Rs 3000 will also be deposited in the name of eligible unmarried girls as fixed deposit upon enrolment. The same can be withdrawn with interest upon reaching the age of 18 and passing class X. This scheme is covered under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) Scheme and is visible on National Scholarship Portal (NSP) since 2015-16.
A Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University is being carried out since 2008 by the HRD Ministry, Department of Higher Education. Financial assistance is provided to meritorious students pursuing higher studies belonging to families with income less than 8 lakh per annum. The scheme considers 82000 fresh scholarship award every year and 50% is earmarked for girls.
Since 2006 the UGC has been implementing a scheme of Post Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for single girl child. It provides financial assistance to selected students to pursue Post graduation in university/institutions/ colleges in India. This scheme too is visible on National Scholarship portal (NSP) since 2017-18. UGC also provides Swami Vivekananda Single Girl Child Fellowship for Research in Social Sciences and Post-Doctoral fellowship for Women for providing financial assistance to selected candidates for pursuing research / higher research on full time/regular basis in University/Institute/Colleges in India.
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) gives “Pragati Scholarship Scheme for Girls Student” for advancement of girl’s participation in Technical Education. 4000 scholarships are granted every year to one girl per family with income less than 6 lakhs per annum. Candidate must have been in 1st year of the degree or diploma programme of any AICTE approved institute during the 2015-16 academic year through centralized admission process of state/ centre government.
