Specialisations in History:
History can be divided into three major specialisations — archaeology, museology and archival studies. A degree in history followed by a specialisation at the Masters level, can pave the way to a number of careers.
Archaeology:
This is both research-based or field related work. Excavation is just one aspect of archaeology. You can even specialise in particular objects of study e.g. expert on coins (numismatist), deciphering inscriptions (epigraphist) .
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and state governments employ archaeologists for maintenance of monuments, heritage bodies, museums and research institutions.
Museology:
Museologists or the specialists in museology deal with the design, organization, and management of museums. Their job profile consist of research, administration and public relations.
Museum Curators:
Museum curators specialise in natural history, metals, terracotta, textiles, paintings, and other related things including maintenance of detailed record of each item. The field requires an artistic and aesthetic bent of mind along with administrative skills.
Archivists
Experts in preservation, repairing parchment and paper manuscripts and microfilming documents, they get to work in museums, libraries, the National Archives of India and in different state archives.
Historians
Historians study and research history and publish their findings. The prerequisite to becoming a historian is a Bachelor’s degree in history followed by a Masters in specific areas such as political history, military history etc.
History Experts:
A history expert is in demand in production houses who want to make a film based on historical characters/events. He is required to undertake extensive research work of the era on costumes, jewellery, movies sets etc
Teachers:
Those interested in academics can become a teacher at school/university level.
Civil Services:
History has always been a favorite subject for the Civil Services exam, particularly the main exam.
Although vast, the syllabus offers many advantages like easy to understand and absorb, no dearth of study material and the fact that it covers a key segment of the General Studies paper.
