The cricket academies running in government schools of sector 19, 26 and 40-B in Chandigarh were shut about nine months ago and the education department has handed over these grounds to the sports department. As per school education director these academies did not have a valid permission to operate and thus have been asked to vacate the playgrounds. Till further notice these will remain under the control of the UT sports department.

This has come as setback to the budding cricketers. Inter-district and national-level matches were held in these grounds. This decision is said to affect the local cricket. These academies were coaching poor children free of cost and were also maintaining the infrastructure.
