As per a notification issued by the Directorate of Primary Education and Gujarat Secondary and Higher education Board dated 31-12-18, students in Gujarat government schools shall respond to their attendance call by saying ‘Jai Hind’ or ‘Jai Bharat’ in place of ‘Yes Sir’ to instill a feeling of patriotism in them. This shall be applicable to all students from classes 1 to 12, grant-in-aid and self-financed schools with effect from Jan 01, 2019.

This decision of the Gujarat Education Minister has been criticized by the state Congress unit president and has asked the government to improve the quality of education instead.

On the other hand, this decision has been hailed by the students who feel that saying ‘Jai Bharat’ fill them with a sense of pride for their country and reminds them of its glorious past and the struggle for independence.
