Many schools in Punjab affiliated with CBSE and CISCE are not adhering to the provisions of mandatory teaching of Punjabi. The Punjab state education department has written to CBSE and CISCE to instruct all schools affiliated to them to teach Punjabi as a compulsory subject and that no student should be discouraged from speaking in Punjabi in school. The letter mentions that they have been receiving complaints that some schools dissuade students from expressing themselves during informal discussions which adversely impacts their mental development and some may just not be able to express themselves giving them an inferiority complex.
