Ever since the Ministry of Human Resource Development participated in Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), CBSE has revised its assessment and evaluation practices. The disheartening performance of class 10 students in Mathematics, Science, Social Science, English and Modern Indian Language reported by the National Assessment Survey 2017-18 is another reason for proposing changes to the assessment and evaluation model.

CBSE has proposed to introduce internal assessment component of at least 20 marks for all subjects in class 12 including mathematics. Minimum 25% marks will be allotted to objective type questions including multiple-choice questions. 75% marks will be reserved for subjective questions and the number of subjective questions will be reduced to enable students enough time to give analytical and creative answers. The proposed changes will come into effect from academic year 2019-20.
