As per the Tribal Development Minister Ashok Uikey, the government run ashram shalas for tribal children in Maharashtra will be made into English medium schools. This will be done in phased manner for better educational opportunities for tribal children of rural Maharashtra.

Presently, 502 ashram shalas are being run by the Tribal Development Department. Medium of instruction here in Marathi and the curriculum followed is as prescribed by the Maharashtra State Education Board.  50 government run such schools which have better infrastructure like building, hostels, electricity, playgrounds, libraries, laboratories and computer centres etc will be converted into English Medium schools in the first phase and admissions will be granted to students of grade I. Students from grade VI will also be given admission for academic session 2019-20. Qualified teachers from reputed private schools will be brought in for this purpose. Subjects like Science and Maths will be taught both in Marathi and English from class 6 onwards  here.
