With the country’s forest cover reduced to 20% due to heavy deforestation, the Philippines government has passed a law whereby every student will have to plant 10 trees to get his/her graduation degree. If executed properly, over 175 million trees will be planted every year. The bill ‘Graduation Legacy for the Environment Act’ was unanimously passed by the House of Representatives, Philippines. This law shall extend to all colleges, elementary and high school students. The law will be implemented jointly by the Department of Education and Commission on Higher Education (DENR) with Department of Agriculture, Department of Agrarian Reform and National Commission on indigenous people. The areas where the plantation will take place has been earmarked by the government.
