The world is under the threat of ‘learning crisis’ as per a report released by the World Bank in 2017 and this is due to the widespread socio-economic gap and not to mention the ineptitude in teaching of the teachers. The report pointed out the difficulty a middle school child faced while reading texts which included sentences in the local language.
World Bank has suggested some changes to tackle this. A well defined student assessment system can evaluate the health of the education system and work towards modifying the system to support learning.
Community and local NGOs can run reading awareness programs like running reading clubs, organizing reading festivals, donor programs can source age appropriate books for children especially story books etc. Reading fiction helps in sharpening the memory through imagination and also improves vocabulary, writing skills and in understanding the other person’s point of view and perception of things.
