Taking a cue from school boards overseas, in its pilot project in March 2019 students appearing for CBSE class X boards will have the option to answer a standard level or higher level mathematics and english question paper. If successful this could extend to class XII boards too. The students will be asked to make this choice at the time when they shall be filling up the forms later this year. CBSE also clarified that the syllabus would remain the same for both the options only the students will be evaluated at two different levels for math and english so that those who are not keen to pursue the subjects for higher studies can opt for the simpler question paper.

According to an official at The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) the higher-level question paper shall contain more questions on applied mathematics that involves thinking skills of higher order. Several schools across the country are willing to introduce the two question paper option.
